Before you do a Registry Clean Up, it is important to know what the registry is. The Windows registry is the part inside the PC where Windows holds information that it may need to retrieve much faster later on for example when an application is opening up or a system setting is being made. This registry stores information such as user profiles, all the applications installed in the computer and the various types of documents they create, the system hardware details and the ports that are being used.

As time goes by, the Windows Registry can start accumulating information that is no longer valid for performance. A good example is when you uninstalled an unwanted program without going through the "Add or Remove Programs" function in the Control Panel, or even when a file or object in the registry was moved to another location. This misplaced data and information builds up with time and starts clogging your registry, which potentially slows down your computer causing errors and could even lead to system crashes. You also begin to notice that your PC's starting up process is not as fast as it used to be. A registry clean up is then the easiest way to help avoid these problems.

The registry cleanup software finds and deletes any unwanted registry items on your computer. This is the first part of a full-registry diagnosis and repair service. It checks your PC registry locating any invalid properties that need to be removed safely. You should then proceed to remove all the items that this scan finds or you may suggest the ones you want removed.

Unless you are highly knowlegable in the registry files in question, we do not recommend this. It is very difficult to know which items work with which properties and applications in your system and chances are that you may remove an important item causing errors.

Just remember to always use the "Add or Remove Programs" function contained in the Windows Control Panel. This tool ensures that any registry files that are related to the uninstalled program are correctly removed.

Every Windows PC has an "undo" function that can do a System Restore incase you accidentally remove a vital item in your registry. This enables you to restore your system to it's original settings right before the scan commenced. Access the System Restore Wizard in Win XP by:

i. Clicking on Start.
ii. Select All Programs.
iii. Click Accesories, then System Tools, then System Restore.
iv. Once in the System Restore Wizard, Select the "Restore my Computer to an earlier time", then Click the "Next" button.
v. Use the Calendar displayed to select the date you did the cleanup scan and then command your computer to revert to it's state right before you did the scan.

It is advisable to run a registry clean up at least once a month, perhaps twice if your PC is used very frequently.
